Race for Oceans Port Harcourt, Nigeria: Raising global awareness about ocean plastic!

Champions from Nigeria have been selected to be part of a global movement to organize worldwide events addressing plastic pollution in the oceans.

Joining champions from over forty countries across six continents, Nigeria’s Race for Oceans champions, Emmanuella Osabuohien, Paul Arhamerene, and Anthony Oyakhilome Justice, are organizing a fun, inclusive, educational, and active event that will seek to mobilize the community to engage in Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water!

The event took place at Port Harcourt Tourist Beach in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, and started at 9:00 AM GMT+1 on the 23rd of October 2021 had 35+ participants from five different youth organizations. Everyone who is interested in or wants to learn more about how to make our oceans and water bodies clean and safe was welcomed at the event. During the one-day event we had;

  1. Knowledge Sharing space
  2. Clean-up exercise
  3. Beach sports activities

We had volunteers from

  • AIESEC in Port Harcourt
  • Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) Network Rivers state Hub
  • Impact Leaders Club
  • Student Energy University of Port Harcourt chapter, and our recycling partner
  • Fifth Seed Recycling Limited

Race for Oceans is a not-for-profit initiative aiming to shine a light on the challenge of growing plastic in the oceans. The initiative has received national awards for its unique ability to create synergy between sports, beach clean-ups, knowledge-sharing, and its inclusive approach to community engagement. Initiated in Denmark, Race for Oceans Foundation joined hands with UNLEASH this year to globalize its concept through a series of local events spearheaded by local champions all over the world.
